Over-water Thai seafood restaurant on a wooden pier at golden hour
At the table

Eat & Drink

Casual, local and built around fresh seafood. Most kitchens cluster along the Ao Kao back road and around Ao Nid — no chains, no fast food, just long Thai dinners under the palms.

The two essentials

Featured tables

If you only book two meals on Koh Mak, make them these — one for lunch over the water, one for dinner above the sunset.

Koh Mak Seafood

Ao Nid pier

The island's most famous restaurant. A long-running over-water spot with tanks of live crabs, oysters and fish — order from the tank and it arrives grilled or steamed minutes later. The house jungle curry is excellent, and the Koh Mak museum next door makes for a perfect post-lunch wander.

Best for
Fresh seafood, groups, special dinners
Tip
Book ahead for weekends and peak weeks — it fills up fast.

The Coral

South coast, Ao Daeng

Hidden on the south coast in a secluded sea-terrace setting. Wood-fired pizza oven, full bar, live music and a pool table — a long-running Koh Mak institution that's worth the scooter ride for sundowners or a long evening out.

Best for
Pizza, sundowners, evening out

Restaurants & cafés

Family kitchens, beach cafés and farm-to-table Thai cooking — clustered along Ao Kao's informal Walking Street.

  • Kon Gin Sen

Ao Kao back road ("Walking Street")

One of the island's best and longest-running kitchens. Big Isan flavours — laab, whole fried fish, som tam — alongside a full Thai/Western menu. Popular with locals and long-stay regulars.

Best for · Thai food lovers, hearty meals

  • Food Garden

    Ao Kao back road

Right next door to Kon Gin Sen. BBQ and kra ta (Thai hot pot cook-at-table sets) — a fun, communal way to spend a long dinner.

  • Coco Cafe

    Ao Kao beach

The island's daytime social hub. Beachfront café for coffee, smoothies, light meals and fresh coconuts. Also the base for the guided bike tours (9:00 & 16:00) and beach volleyball.

Best for · Breakfast, coffee, meeting other travellers

  • Koh Mak Organic Farm Restaurant

    Behind Ao Suan Yai

Run by Leng — farm-to-table Thai cooking with cooking classes available. Also rents e-bikes and golf carts if you fancy exploring after lunch.

Best for · Organic Thai food, cooking classes

Bars & nightlife

Golden hour, cold beer and live music — not clubs or late nights. Most bars close by midnight, and that's the charm.

  • The Coral Bar

    South coast

Full bar with live music, wood-fired food, a pool table and a beautiful over-water terrace facing the sunset. The island's most atmospheric evening spot.

  • Koh Mak Resort Beach Bar

    Ao Suan Yai

Beachfront bar just off the resort pier. Cold beers, cocktails, fresh coconuts — and in high season, fire shows and low-key beach parties. Home of the Thaibreak festival.

  • Good Time Bar

    Ao Kao back road

Between Makathanee and Good Time Resort. Live music, cocktails and a bohemian Czech-run atmosphere. Open late — the kind of place you end up talking to strangers until 1am.

  • Hidden Beach Bar

    Ao Prao

A small bar built on a pier above the sea, attached to Hidden Beach Resort. Perfect for sunset cocktails or a pre-snorkel coffee.

  • Thai Hippie Beach Bar

    Ao Kao area

Koh Mak's original hippie beach bar. Live music, food, cannabis outlet — easy to lose a few hours by the ocean.

Practical eating notes

Before you sit down

Small things that make eating around Koh Mak smoother.

Cash preferred
Most small restaurants and bars are cash only. Cards work at the fancier resorts.
One ATM on the island
Located in the centre of the island and often empty — bring enough cash from the mainland.
What you'll pay
Thai lunch ฿150–300. Seafood dinner ฿400–800. Beer ฿70–120.
No 7-Eleven
Small minimarts on the Ao Kao back road stock snacks, drinks, toiletries and SIM top-ups.
Spice warning
Kitchens cook to Thai spice levels by default. Say "mai phet" for not spicy or "phet nit noi" for a little spicy.
Best seafood
Order from the tank at Koh Mak Seafood — crab, oysters, barramundi and snapper are all excellent.
