The journey

Getting There

Koh Mak takes a little planning to reach — and that effort is exactly what keeps it so peaceful. No car ferries, passengers only.

Choose your route

From Bangkok, two ways

Most travellers pick between an overland combo or a quick flight. A private transfer is the third option if you'd rather skip the logistics altogether.

Option 01 · Easiest

Bus + Speedboat

~6–7 hours total

One combined ticket from Bangkok all the way to the island — the most hassle-free way to arrive.

  1. 1.Bus from Bangkok (Ekamai) to Trat / Ao Thammachat pier — 4.5–5 hrs
  2. 2.Pickup or taxi transfer to Laem Sok or Laem Ngop pier
  3. 3.Speedboat or catamaran to Koh Mak — 30–60 min

Boonsiri Ferry runs the most reliable combined bus + catamaran ticket — book at boonsiriferry.com.

Option 02 · Fastest

Flight + Speedboat

~2.5–3 hours total

Bangkok Airways flies daily from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Trat (TDX). A short taxi, then a boat.

  1. 1.Fly BKK → Trat (TDX) with Bangkok Airways
  2. 2.Taxi to Laem Ngop or Laem Sok pier — 20–25 min
  3. 3.Speedboat to Koh Mak — 30–60 min

Winter timetable: PG305 arrives Trat at 13:45 — just enough time to catch the 15:00 Boonsiri catamaran.

Last boats leave ~16:00–16:30. Flights landing after 16:00 (e.g. PG307 at 17:10) cannot reach the island the same day.

Option 03 · Most comfortable

Private transfer

Door-to-pier private car from Bangkok hotels, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or DMK. The easiest option for families or groups — book through ferry companies or private transfer services.

Mainland piers

Where you leave from

  • Laem Sok Pier (Trat)

Now the main pier for most services — ~30 km from Trat City. Boonsiri, Seudamgo and Koh Kut Express all operate from here, and most combined bus+boat tickets land here.

  • Laem Ngop (Krom Luang Pier)

Historic pier with fewer services today. Some speedboat operators still run direct Koh Mak routes from here — check your specific operator. Covered overnight parking is available at both piers.

Island piers

Where you land

  • Ao Nid Pier

    Main pier · southeast coast

Boonsiri, M Marine, Koh Kut Express and Seudamgo dock here — also the island's main fishing pier and local hub.

  • Koh Mak Resort Pier

    Ao Suan Yai

Some speedboats (Panan, Bang Bao Boats) arrive and depart here directly.

  • Makathanee Resort Pier

    Ao Kao

Leelawadee and Kai Bae Nor Nou (island hopping) dock here. At low tide in May/June, boats may redirect to Ao Nid.

Seasonal note

Plan around the boats, not the other way around

High season · Nov–Apr

Multiple daily boats, all companies running, easy connections from Bangkok and Koh Chang.

Low season · Jun–Sep

Only Boonsiri runs reliably. Expect flexible plans and possible cancellations — Koh Mak is blissfully quiet, but check schedules carefully.

No scheduled Koh Chang ↔ Koh Mak boats mid-May to end-October.
