What is there
Beachfront pool
The pool sits between the bungalows and the sand on Ao Kao, so you can move from pool to sea in under a minute. West-facing, which means the sunset happens directly in front of you.
Beach restaurant
Thai standards, fresh local seafood and Western dishes served on the sand. Handy for dinner even if you are not a guest — it sits in the middle of the island's main eating zone.
Dive centre
One of the island's long-standing dive operations, running trips out to the Koh Rang marine park and snorkelling excursions to Koh Kham and the Rayang islets.
Private pier
Makathanee Resort Pier is one of Koh Mak's working piers. Leelawadee and the Kai Bae Nor Nou island-hopping boats dock here; at very low tides in May and June boats can be redirected to Ao Nid.
How to reach Ao Kao
Boats from Laem Sok pier near Trat reach Koh Mak in 45 to 80 minutes depending on whether you take the car ferry or a speedboat — times and prices are on our Koh Mak ferry page. From the arrival pier, Ao Kao is roughly a ten-minute songthaew ride; see getting around Koh Mak for scooter, bicycle and taxi options once you are on the island. If you plan to dive or snorkel, check the best time to visit Koh Mak first — trips to Koh Kham and Koh Rang depend on the sea, not the calendar.
