By Bennet Görlitz, from his Google review — five stars, written in 2025 after six weeks travelling through Thailand. He stayed at Good Times Resort and trained Muay Thai at Phoenix Gym. Here is his review in full.

The Review

Muay Thai Gym Koh Mak has been the highlight of my 6 weeks travels through Thailand. The combination of a very peaceful island with happy people and daily Muay Thai training gave me a physical and mental reboot I was searching for, for a long time.

I stayed at Good Times Resort, whose friendly owner gave me a great deal for accommodation + a 50% discount on the Muay Thai training lessons!

The trainers come from a famous Muay Thai Gym in Chiang Mai (e.g., Team Quest) and are themselves active fighters. All equipment at the gym is new, and you are provided with bandages and boxing gloves.

So if you want to learn Muay Thai in a paradise setting, learn how to defend yourself, or just get in shape or lose weight… go to Phoenix Gym Koh Mak (now managed by Elite Fight Club Bangkok), and you will be really happy. — Bennet Görlitz

Where He Stayed and Trained

Good Times Resort is part of Koh Mak Village, where Yodying and Mr Peak look after guests and help arrange accommodation deals, transfers and training packages. Phoenix Gym is the island's Muay Thai gym: group classes and private sessions for beginners and experienced fighters alike. For other guests' experiences, read TaranVeer's Muay Thai stay at Good Times Resort and a couple's first Muay Thai class at Phoenix Gym.

A Physical and Mental Reboot

The reboot Bennet describes is a pattern we hear from long-stay guests. Koh Mak runs at two speeds: one week you can train Muay Thai twice a day, play tennis or pickleball, and rent a bike for the dirt roads out to the far bays. The next you can do almost nothing at all — and because the island is small, switching between the two takes no planning at all. Guests staying six weeks or longer can settle into daily training and really feel the difference.

Getting There Is the Easy Part

Bennet's six weeks started like every stay: fly or take a bus to Trat, then a short speedboat crossing to the island. Our Getting There page lists the current boat times, the piers, and private door-to-door transfers if you arrive with a lot of luggage.

Thank you for the kind words, Bennet — a reboot earned one session at a time. The ring, the beach and all of us will be here whenever you need the next one.
